Meaning and formation
Gonzales means “son of Gonzalo”. It is a Spanish spelling variant of González, a patronymic surname made from the personal name Gonzalo and the family-name ending -ez. The Philippine form has s where González has z and is commonly written without the Spanish accent. It was borrowed into Tagalog and Cebuano as a surname. Philippine bearers include Neptali Gonzales, a lawyer who served as president of the Senate, and his son Neptali Gonzales II, who represented Mandaluyong in the House of Representatives.
