Meaning and formation

Laurel comes from the Spanish word for the laurel tree. The Spanish surname was borrowed into Tagalog and Cebuano with the same spelling as the tree name. In Philippine history, Jose P. Laurel bore it as president of the Second Philippine Republic during the Japanese occupation from 1943 to 1945. His son Salvador Laurel later served as vice president of the Philippines. The municipality of Laurel in Batangas was named after Jose P. Laurel, giving the family surname a separate use as a Philippine place name.
