Meaning and formation
Macapagal may derive from a Kapampangan expression meaning “to tire”. Tagalog and Kapampangan origins have both been suggested for the surname. In the family of President Diosdado Pangan Macapagal, the paternal surname came from Urbano Macapagal of Lubao, Pampanga, while Pangan came from his mother Romana. Diosdado served as president from 1961 to 1965. His daughter Gloria later used Macapagal together with her married surname Arroyo. The family has used Macapagal both as a surname on its own and within the combined form Macapagal-Arroyo.
