Meaning and formation

Magsaysay comes from the Tagalog verb magsaysay, “to narrate”. It joins mag- to saysay; the root can also mean “value” or “significance”, while Cebuano has the same mag- and saysay formation. Ramon Magsaysay bore this Philippine-language surname as president from 1953 until his death in 1957. Before the presidency he represented Zambales in Congress and served as secretary of national defense. His son, Ramon Magsaysay Jr., later served in the House of Representatives and the Senate, continuing the surname in Philippine public life.
