Origin and formation

Marcos comes from the Spanish personal name Marcos, continuing Latin Marcus. A personal name thus became the basis of the surname, which was borrowed into Tagalog. The same written form can be used as either a given name or a family surname. In the Philippine presidential family, Ferdinand Edralin Marcos inherited Marcos from his father Mariano Marcos, while Edralin came from his mother Josefa. His son Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. likewise inherited the surname, with Romualdez coming from his mother Imelda’s family name.
