Meaning and formation
Ramos means “branches” in Spanish. The surname comes from ramos, the plural of ramo, ultimately from Latin rāmus, and was borrowed into Tagalog. It retains the final s that marks the Spanish plural. Philippine bearers include Fidel V. Ramos, president from 1992 to 1998, and his father Narciso Ramos. Narciso worked as a journalist, lawyer and diplomat and served in the Philippine legislature. Fidel had a military career before entering the national cabinet and the presidency.
