Meaning and formation
Roxas comes from rojas, “red” in the feminine plural. It is an older Spanish spelling of Rojas, preserving x for the sound now written j. The surname was borrowed into Tagalog while that older spelling was still in use. Manuel Roxas bore it as the last president of the Commonwealth and the first president of the independent Third Republic in 1946. His son Gerry Roxas became a senator, and his grandson Mar Roxas served in the Senate and the national cabinet. Philippine places also commemorate Manuel Roxas.
