Meaning and formation
Santos means “saints” in Spanish. It comes from santos, the plural of santo, and became a surname from that religious word. The Spanish surname was borrowed into both Tagalog and Cebuano, preserving the final s of the plural form. In Philippine public life, bearers have included the writer Bienvenido N. Santos and the actress Vilma Santos. Bienvenido wrote fiction and poetry in English, while Vilma worked in film and later served as governor of Batangas.
