Origin and formation

Sin comes from the Hokkien surname Sin, written 辛. The Philippine form preserves the sound of that surname in Roman letters. It is a borrowed family name, with the Hokkien pronunciation behind the Philippine spelling. Jaime Lachica Sin, born in New Washington, Aklan, was a Philippine bearer. He served as archbishop of Manila from 1974 until 2003 and was made a cardinal in 1976.
