Meaning and formation

Singson is traditionally explained as Hokkien cheng-sun (曾孫 or 曾孙), “great-grandson” in a male line. The surname passed through Spanish spelling before entering Tagalog and Cebuano. This kinship expression refers to a male descendant three generations below an ancestor, rather than simply to a grandson. Another Philippine surname, Canoy, has a traditional great-grandson explanation from a different Hokkien term and different characters. In Philippine public life, Chavit Singson bore Singson as governor of Ilocos Sur. His son Ronald Singson also served as a representative of the province.
