Origin and formation
Sy can come from either of two Hokkien surnames: Si (施) or Sih (薛). The borrowing passed through the Spanish spelling Sy into Tagalog and Cebuano. Siy is a related documented spelling, while the underlying Chinese character can distinguish surname origins that share the short Roman form. Henry Sy, the founder of ShoeMart, bore the character 施 in his Chinese name. He moved from Fujian to the Philippines as a child and opened the Manila shoe store in 1958 that developed into the SM group of businesses.
