Origin and formation

Uy comes from the Hokkien surname Ûiⁿ (黃 or 黄). The borrowing passed through Spanish spelling before entering Tagalog and Cebuano. The same Chinese surname has other language forms, including Huang and Wong, whose Roman spellings reflect different pronunciations. Uy preserves the Hokkien reading in a short Philippine spelling. Philippine bearers include Roberto Uy, who served as mayor of Dipolog and governor of Zamboanga del Norte, and Rolando Uy, who served as a representative and mayor of Cagayan de Oro.
