MEANING & HISTORY
What does Amelia mean?
Amelia is a variant of Amalia, a shortened Germanic name built around the element amal. Modern onomastic treatment connects that element with vigour, bravery, or being unceasing, and also with the Gothic Amali dynasty.
The common gloss work is therefore an oversimplification. Amelia is historically distinct from Emilia, despite their similar sound and later confusion. Its established borrowing history supplies a better explanation than simply equating the two spellings.
