MEANING & HISTORY
What does Ariane mean?
Ariane is the French form of Ariadne, the classical name of the woman who helped Theseus escape the labyrinth. A traditional analysis interprets Ariadne as most holy, but some scholars prefer a pre-Greek origin and regard that compound as doubtful.
The direct French-to-Greek relationship is therefore firmer than a single unquestioned root gloss. Ariane preserves the old name through French development, separate from modern names that merely begin with Ari.
