MEANING & HISTORY

What does Aristotle mean?

Aristotle is the English form of Greek Aristoteles, transmitted through Latin Aristoteles. The compound joins aristos, best, and telos, purpose, result, or completion.

The ancient philosopher is the best-known bearer, but the name’s word structure is not simply a tribute meaning wise philosopher. The English ending reflects a later adaptation of the Greek form. Its etymology expresses an ideal of the best purpose rather than a prediction of intellectual achievement.
