MEANING & HISTORY
What does Baldwin mean?
Baldwin is a Germanic compound joining bald, bold or brave, with wini, friend. It was established in medieval Flanders and among the Normans, who carried it to Britain.
The word friend is an actual historical element, not a later sentimental addition. The name’s appearance as both a surname and a given name reflects a longer history of personal naming. Bold friend is therefore a linguistic interpretation rather than a description of any particular bearer’s social behaviour.
