MEANING & HISTORY
What does Belinda mean?
Belinda arose in the seventeenth century and became familiar through Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock. Its deeper formation is disputed.
Proposals involve Italian bella, beautiful, and a Germanic lind element, but these do not establish one certain ancient compound. The name consequently has a specific literary history without a proven single dictionary translation. Presenting that history is more accurate than confidently calling every Belinda beautiful serpent or promising a particular character.
