MEANING & HISTORY
What does Brenda mean?
Brenda is commonly connected with Old Norse brandr, sword, although the exact history of the personal name is not completely secure. Its resemblance to Brendan has also encouraged treatment as a feminine counterpart.
That resemblance does not establish a shared original root: Brendan has a different Irish history. Sword is therefore a qualified etymological reading, while the name’s established spelling and independent use are clear.

EnglishEtymology & source
Possibly from Old Norse brandr (“sword”); by folk etymology seen as a feminine form of Brendan. Its use as a nickname for Queen Elizabeth II originated in Private Eye in reaction to a perceived attempt by the royals to appear less distant and upper class.
