MEANING & HISTORY
What does Beryl mean?
Beryl has two documented personal-name traditions. The English gemstone name is the route borrowed into Tagalog and Cebuano.
Separately, the English dictionary records a Yiddish masculine name corresponding to Berl, little bear. These senses come from different sources and should not be blended into one symbolic translation. The Latin-letter spelling alone does not identify a family’s intended route.
Beryl’s gemstone association is also not confined to one color, since the personal-name record supplies the mineral word rather than a particular jewel chosen by a family.
