MEANING & HISTORY
What does Errol mean?
Errol is a given name transferred from a Scottish surname, itself linked with a place name. The consulted dictionary does not establish a secure literal meaning for that older place name.
In American usage Errol has sometimes been interpreted alongside Earl, but resemblance is not proof that the two began with the same root. “Nobleman,” the direct sense associated with Earl, should therefore not automatically become the meaning of Errol. The name’s surname-and-place formation is useful evidence in its own right.
Preserve the double r when comparing it with Errol’s shorter-looking neighbors in a name list.
