MEANING & HISTORY
What does Carmen mean?
Carmen developed in Spanish from a Marian title referring to Mount Carmel, Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The place-name Carmel belongs to a Hebrew word family for a garden or cultivated land.
The spelling Carmen also became associated with Latin carmen, song or poem, which explains a second familiar association. That Latin word is not the complete historical explanation of the devotional name. A family may value either the Marian connection or the musical association, but the documented route is through the title and the place-name rather than an invented compound meaning.
