MEANING & HISTORY
What does Doreen mean?
Doreen was formed from Dora with the name suffix een. Dora can shorten Dorothy, Theodora, or Isidora, so the later Doreen need not have one compulsory longer base.
The form appeared in nineteenth-century naming and was used in Edna Lyall’s novel Doreen. Its immediate formation is therefore specific and comparatively modern. Any deeper gift-related meaning belongs to the selected Dora-base rather than to the suffix or the whole spelling independently.
