MEANING & HISTORY
What does Doris mean?
Doris is a Greek name meaning Dorian woman, referring to the Dorian people. Greek mythology also uses Doris for a sea nymph, creating a water association in cultural history.
That narrative does not make gift of the sea the literal meaning. The name later entered English personal naming and is familiar through figures such as Doris Day. The ethnic-geographical sense and the mythological association are both meaningful parts of its history but should remain distinguishable.
