MEANING & HISTORY
What does Gail mean?
Gail is a shortened form of Abigail. The Hebrew base is traditionally interpreted as my father is joy, combining a father element with rejoicing.
Gail carries that name-family connection without independently containing the whole Hebrew sentence. Its spelling also keeps it separate from Gaelic names that merely sound similar. The short form can be a complete registered name, so its historical relation to Abigail does not require a longer name on any particular person’s documents.
