MEANING & HISTORY
What does Jennifer mean?
Jennifer comes through Cornish forms of the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar, the name family also represented by Guinevere. The usual analysis combines an element for white or fair with one for a phantom or supernatural being.
“White phantom” is a conventional compact rendering; fair can also convey beauty in name explanations. The path through Cornish matters because Jennifer is not a modern blend of Jenny and another ending. Its later popularity in English-speaking countries belongs to the name’s usage history, separate from its older Celtic word formation.
