MEANING & HISTORY
What does Julius mean?
Julius is the familiar modern spelling of Latin Iulius, the name of a prominent Roman family. One proposed derivation connects it with Greek ioulos, the first soft growth of a beard; another relates it to Jove or Jupiter.
The later meanings youthful or devoted to Jupiter summarize these different proposals rather than a single settled translation. The personal name continued through Roman and Christian naming traditions and produced relatives such as Julian and Jules. Giving the original family name is a specific historical explanation without turning the beard proposal into a description of every bearer.
