MEANING & HISTORY
What does Leonor mean?
Leonor is a Spanish and Portuguese form related to Eleanor and the Occitan name Alienor. Its medieval history is well attested, particularly through royal bearers.
The deeper formation of Alienor remains debated. A famous account involving the phrase other Aenor does not settle all early evidence. Leonor should therefore not automatically be given Helen’s proposed light meaning merely because the names resemble one another.
