MEANING & HISTORY
What does Lilian mean?
Lilian is strongly associated with the lily, through Latin lilium, but its formation has also been connected with an older familiar form of Elizabeth. The dictionary preserves both explanations rather than reducing the history to one certain origin.
This makes “lily-associated” a better headline than an unqualified claim that every Lilian began as the flower word. Lilian and Lillian are closely related spellings, while Lily is a separate short form worth comparing. The flower association describes naming history and imagery; it does not establish a particular family’s intention or imply a promised quality in the person who carries it.
