MEANING & HISTORY
What does Lourdes mean?
Lourdes is a place-derived given name, taken from the French town associated with Marian pilgrimage. As a personal name it often comes through the devotional expression Our Lady of Lourdes, or a longer name such as María de Lourdes.
The town-name is therefore the immediate source; it is not a word meaning miracle, healing or grace. Those ideas may be religious associations chosen by a family, but they are different from linguistic translation. Keeping the actual town and devotional title in the explanation gives Lourdes a specific and recognizable origin.
