MEANING & HISTORY
What does Lucas mean?
Lucas comes from Latin Lucas and Greek Loukas, the source of English Luke. It is commonly explained as a shortened form of a name meaning from Lucania, an ancient region of southern Italy.
A connection with Lucius is another historical proposal. The geographical account is therefore more specific than automatically translating Lucas as light. The biblical evangelist Luke helped transmit the name.
