MEANING & HISTORY

What does Menchu mean?

Menchu is explicitly recorded in the Spanish dictionary as a familiar form of Carmen. The older name is connected with the Marian title Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Its spelling was later influenced by Latin carmen, song, according to the consulted editorial account. Menchu should therefore not simply be translated as song without explaining the Carmen relationship. The distinctive short form can function independently; it does not require the bearer’s registered name to be María del Carmen or Carmen.
