MEANING & HISTORY
What does Natasha mean?
Natasha is a Russian diminutive of Natalya. Natalya continues Natalia, part of the Latin birthday-name tradition associated with Christmas.
Natasha’s immediate formation is the familiar Russian form, not a separate ancient word for gift. Tolstoy’s War and Peace is a major literary association of this spelling. The name was later borrowed independently into English and other languages, so a Natasha need not officially carry Natalya as a longer registered name.
