MEANING & HISTORY
What does Sancho mean?
Sancho is a longstanding Iberian personal name. One account connects it with Late Latin Sanctius and Latin sanctus, “holy” or “saintly.”
Another possibility is an older Iberian name that was later associated with the Latin form. The dictionary also records the Basque connection Santxo, showing that the language history is more complicated than a direct word translation. Sancho is familiar from Cervantes’s Sancho Panza and from medieval royal names, but those bearers do not settle its earliest derivation.
“Possibly holy” is therefore useful and specific, provided the qualification stays attached.
