MEANING & HISTORY
What does Sonny mean?
Sonny developed from an affectionate English address for a young boy, based on the word son. It later became a personal name used in its own right.
This is a direct everyday-word formation rather than a hidden ancient compound. The spelling differs from Sunny, whose visible word association is sunshine; matching their sound does not establish the same etymology. A person called Sonny need not be the only or youngest son in a family.
The origin explains the familiar form without prescribing an individual’s family position.
