MEANING & HISTORY
What does Sonya mean?
Sonya is a Roman spelling of Russian Соня, a familiar form of Sofya or Sofia. These continue Greek Sophia, wisdom.
Russian literature helped introduce the familiar form into English, where it became an independent given name. The y is part of the transliteration tradition rather than a new root. Sonya is not an accidental shortened Sonia that needs correction.
