MEANING & HISTORY
What does Sophia mean?
Sophia is the Greek word for wisdom used as a personal name. Its root remains recognizable in philosophy, literally a love of wisdom, although Sophia’s name history does not depend on that later comparison.
The phrase Hagia Sophia means Holy Wisdom and belongs to a separate religious title. Royal, literary, and everyday uses helped transmit the name internationally. The word meaning is clear without assigning any particular intellectual ability to a child.
