MEANING & HISTORY
What does Gaspar mean?
Gaspar is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Jasper and also occurs in Latin transmission. The deeper name history has been connected with a word for treasurer, through proposed Hebrew and Persian links.
That interpretation is traditional rather than an unquestioned reconstruction. Gaspar is also one of the names assigned to the Magi in later Christian tradition; the Gospel itself does not supply their personal names. That devotional history is distinct from the proposed occupational root.
