MEANING & HISTORY
What does Guinevere mean?
Guinevere comes through medieval French and English from Welsh Gwenhwyfar. The consulted editorial account interprets the older Celtic elements as white and phantom or magical being.
That traditional compound analysis is distinct from the famous Arthurian queen’s literary role. The dictionary also identifies its relationship to Jennifer through different language development. Guinevere should therefore not be translated as queen merely because a queen bears it in legend.
The longer historical form and its later adaptations retain different exact spellings.
