MEANING & HISTORY
What does Guadalupe mean?
Guadalupe comes into personal naming through Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Our Lady of Guadalupe. The title refers to a Spanish place-name; its first element is Arabic wadi, valley or river, while a proposed second element is Latin lupus, wolf.
That complete place-name analysis remains qualified. The Marian title also has a major Mexican devotional history. The title-to-place relationship is established more securely than a universal literal translation of the entire name as river of wolves.

SpanishEtymology & source
Originally referred to the river in southern Spain. It was likely named between 711 CE and 1492 CE, when Spain came under Muslim control, and the high-prestige language became Arabic. See Guadalupe (Spain) on Wikipedia.Wikipedia . "An alternative etymological explanation, which is commonly found on the internet, states that the name may have derived from the Arabic word for 'valley' or 'river' (wadi) and the Latin word lupus, meaning 'wolf'. Some find it unlikely that Arabic and Latin would be combined in this way, and suggest as an alternative the Arabic "Wadi-al-lub", signifying a river with black stones in its bed."
