MEANING & HISTORY
What does Gustavo mean?
Gustavo is a Spanish, Italian and Portuguese form of Gustav. The older name has competing explanations: an Old Norse staff-of-the-Geats interpretation is possible, but the proposed early compound is poorly attested; a Slavic Gostislav route has also been proposed.
The editorial source explicitly retains that uncertainty. Gustavo’s specific form relationship is well documented even when its remote roots are disputed. It should not be made into a certain ancient phrase or translated from unrelated modern Spanish words.
