MEANING & HISTORY
What does Hortensia mean?
Hortensia is the feminine form of the Roman family name Hortensius, later continued in Spanish. The English dictionary records borrowing through Spanish.
The proposed relationship to Latin hortus, garden, is qualified in the editorial account and should not be made into a certain elaborate phrase such as garden of heaven. The Roman family-name formation is the firmer history. Hortensia and French Hortense are related forms but retain different spelling traditions; the name alone does not prove an association with a particular flower or gardener.
