MEANING & HISTORY
What does Luke mean?
Luke is the English form of Latin Lucas, from Greek Loukas. The usual explanation connects it with a longer name meaning from Lucania, a region of southern Italy.
A connection with Lucius has also been proposed. The evangelist Luke helped spread the name in Christian usage. The geographical account is more specific than automatically assigning the simple meaning light.
