MEANING & HISTORY

What does Cipriano mean?

Cipriano continues Latin Cyprianus through Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Cyprianus was a geographical description meaning from Cyprus, the eastern Mediterranean island.

The name is therefore place-derived rather than a direct word for copper, despite the wider linguistic history connecting Cyprus and copper vocabulary. Saint Cyprian of Carthage is a major Christian association. A modern Cipriano need not have been born on Cyprus; the historical place-reference belongs to the inherited name.
