MEANING & HISTORY
What does Jean mean?
Jean has two familiar naming traditions: a masculine French form of John and a feminine English or Scottish name related to Jeanne. Both belong to the broad name family ultimately expressing God’s graciousness in Hebrew.
The Tagalog and Cebuano accounts emphasize the English feminine route, so language context matters when presenting gender or pronunciation. The same four letters do not mean that every bearer uses the same reading. Jean and Jeanne are related but distinct written forms, and neither should be silently substituted for the other.
