MEANING & HISTORY

What does Joaquin mean?

Joaquin is an unaccented form of Spanish Joaquín, continuing Joachim. The older name is associated with Hebrew names represented by Jehoiakim and Jehoiachin, with interpretations Yahweh raises up and Yahweh will establish, respectively.

In Christian tradition Joachim is the name assigned to Mary’s father in the apocryphal Gospel of James. This religious association helped transmit the name, but Joaquin’s missing accent is simply a spelling adaptation rather than evidence for a different ancient origin.
